Prospero in Act
5 represents himself in a different manner. He is level headed and willing to
forget the past. At this point he realizes that he is going to get what he
wants; he will get his dukedom back. Keeping this in mind his character goes
through a dramatic change. Prospero wants to move on and forgive those that have
wronged him. This is expressed by his agreement with himself to throw his magic
away. He realizes that his magic was the root of the problem, because he was
distracted by it and he was not involved in politics as much as he should have
been. By throwing his magic away he is beginning to start his life of royalty
again, and is going back to Milan as a normal person who does not have the
advantage of magic. Prospero frees Ariel and he is no longer the mean master of
her. By taking these actions Prospero shows that he wants to let go of his
anger and move on from his life on the island.
